MAIDEN WIN FOR SUBARU CREW
Chris Cawthorne and Roger Laister of Mablethorpe and District Motor Club guided their Subaru to their first ever overall win on the Autogas Conversions sponsored, Bill Cammack Memorial Stages Rally at Manby airfield on Saturday 21st February.
The Subaru pair were quick from the start, leading the event from start to finish over the eight stages but brake problems almost cost them this win as Gavin Ruler and Dave Everard in their Mitsubushi Evo3 pushed them hard taking fastest time and 14 seconds off the leader on stage 6.
A relieved Chris Cawthorne said afterwards, “That was very hard on our nerves driving for the win, keeping tidy and hoping the car would not let us down on the last stage. We hope now that we have won one, more will be forthcoming. Thanks to all involved in putting this event on”.
Gerry Blythe, Rally Manager said, “ Although the entry of 34 cars was down on normal figures, those that competed thoroughly enjoyed themselves with some very committed driving. It is great to see one of our own club members winning his ‘home’ event”.
As usual, there were class battles though the field with Dave Patrick (from Friskney) and Martin Blood once again bringing home the two wheel drive award and 5th place in their Jaguar powered Opel Manta. Not such good fortune for the Peugeot 205 mounted Mablethorpe members, James Clarke and Dave Peate who rolled their car on stage 2.
